Recently, we developed a new method to detect vibrational responses in micrometer-sized objects combining femtosecond laser with an atomic force microscope. In this research, we applied this method to evaluate mechanical properties of anthracene microcrystals. We estimated the wave velocity and Young's modulus of the crystal from the distance dependence of the arrival time. The value of Young’s modulus was 760 MPa which was extremely lower than that previously reported (10 GPa). One possibility for the significantly different of the Young's moduli is that the surface wave propagation is specifically monitored by this method. By combining with the laser processing, we promote further understanding of the mechanical properties of crystals, which exhibit difference on the surface and in the bulk and orientation of the crystal axis.
