When illuminated by Laser, gold nanostructures exhibit enhanced local electric fields due to surface plasmon resonance. The following photothermal effects via the unique light-to-heat conversion process have been widely studied in biomedical applications, such as drug delivery and cancer therapy. By utilizing the finite element method solver COMSOL Multiphysics 6.1, in this work, we simulated the optical and thermal responses of laser-heating gold spheres and a pair of spheres with a gap surrounded by air and water. In order to explore photothermal properties thoroughly, the spatial and temporal distributions of temperature in both heating and cooling processes are investigated for gold spheres and the pair of spheres with different geometric parameters. The modeling approach can be widely applied to plasmonic nanostructures with arbitrary shapes, sizes, and contents and thus help particle designs achieve optimum photothermal performance.
