Optomechanical systems can exhibit long coherence times and efficient coupling to light, which makes them an interesting interface between light and other systems. In the theoretical case we are investigating, a spin system is coupled to a mechanical oscillator. More specifically, the spin of a nitrogen vacancy (NV) center is coupled to the motion of a membrane resonator which has a magnet attached to it. The oscillation of the membrane creates a magnetic field gradient, which can be sensed by the spin of the NV center. In this work, we study how one can observe this coupling and how can it be used to achieve cooling of the membrane. We investigate the various cooling regimes attainable based on system parameters, such as the coupling strength between the spin and the mechanics, as well as the dissipation of the two systems. This spin-mechanical system can act as a platform for quantum information processing and holds the potential to generate non-classical states of the mechanical motion.
