To control the aggregation behavior of polymers combining an alkoxy-substituted anthrabis(thiadiazole) (ATz) backbone with terthiophene or quaterthiophene units, and thereby improve power conversion efficiency, four novel semiconducting polymers bearing longer solubilizing side chains were synthesized. In addition, the effects of donor units and solubilizing side chains on the photovoltaic performance were systematically investigated through analyses of the thin-film structures of the synthesized polymers, as well as evaluations of solar cell characteristics when paired with low-bandgap n-type semiconductors.
