Moiré photonic crystal (PhC) bilayers have attracted significant attention due to their intriguing optical properties including moiré flatband light localization [1]. Recent studies have shown that the distance between the two layers is a key parameter dictating flatband formation [2]. However, the flatbands exhibit complex behavior particularly at short interlayer distances, underscoring the necessity of further investigations. In this study, we discuss the origin of the complex behavior of the flatbands in twist-stacked moire PhC bilayers. This work helps understand the mechanism of the high-Q, small-mode-volume flatband light localization observed in our previous work [3].
