Landslides are among the most frequent hazards on Java Indonesia, where land-use change strongly and riverbank development increasingly contribute to slope instability. Previous studies have identified settlement-induced building loads near river corridors as important landslide triggers, consistent with the characteristics observed in this study. Therefore, this study evaluated the role of buffer zones and localized LULC transitions in distinguishing landslide and non-landslide catchments across Java Island. The results reveal that landslide catchments consistently exhibit LULC transitions, particularly built-up expansion and vegetation loss, compared with relatively stable catchments. These findings indicate that rapid anthropogenic spatial land transformation can serve as an indicator of increased landslide susceptibility, highlighting the need for stricter land-use control and monitoring in hydrologically sensitive areas.
