Among the many physically based hydrological models, this study introduces the Structure for Unifying Multiple Modeling Alternatives (SUMMA), proposed by Clark et al. SUMMA was developed under the concept of a unified approach to process-based hydrologic modeling, enabling controlled and systematic evaluation of multiple model representations of hydrologic processes and scaling behavior. This study also describes the mizuRoute tool, developed by Mizukami et al., which post-processes runoff outputs from any distributed hydrologic model and can be coupled with the SUMMA framework. In preparation for applying SUMMA to Japanese river basins, we also outline several challenges associated with its application.
