There is a broad consensus that travel holds significant educational value, as it broadens the mind and enables individuals to learn from and interpret their encounters with diverse environments and cultures. Although learning new things and achieving personal growth have long been recognized as important values of travel and tourism, serving as key motivators and desired outcomes of travel, research on how individuals’ affective states enhance travel intention remains relatively underexplored. In this study, it is proposed that awe, a positive and meaning-making emotion, can facilitate a sense of meaningful experience, which in turn promotes travel intention for sport tourism. This study proposes that awe can enhance individuals’ sense of meaningful experience, which in turn promotes their travel intention for sport tourism. Through a laboratory experiment (N = 151), the findings supported the research hypothesis: compared with the experience of amusement, the induced experience of awe in professional sport (i.e., football) increased travel intention to the home ground of an English Premier League football team through heightened meaningful experience. Overall, this study contributes to positive, educational, and tourism psychology by demonstrating that individuals exposed to awe-eliciting situations in professional sport can experience greater meaning, thereby fostering their willingness to explore further through sport tourism in the near future.
