[12人-ポ-01]Athletes with Disabilities and Media Representation in TaiwanBounded Visibility in Disability Sport

This paper examines the career transition of athletes with disabilities in Taiwan through media representation. Career transition is often understood as what athletes do after leaving competition. For athletes with disabilities, however, the issue is not only occupational change. It also concerns how their bodies, abilities, and social value are recognized beyond the sporting arena. While the transition of non-disabled athletes is often narrated as a continuation of professional sport careers, these athletes are more easily placed within stories of perseverance, overcoming adversity, or moral education.
The study asks how athletes with disabilities experience transition and identity reconstruction, how sport institutions support or limit this process, and how media and digital platforms turn these experiences into public narratives. It combines interviews with active and retired athletes with disabilities and disability sport association staff, thematic analysis, and media/frame analysis. Media materials include news reports, sport media, association platforms, and social media in Taiwan.
Preliminary analysis suggests that transition often begins before retirement. Many athletes negotiate training, work, study, income insecurity, and future uncertainty at the same time. Institutional support remains competition- and medal-oriented, while long-term career pathways, employment linkage, and the translation of athletic ability into social value remain weak. Media representation tends to make these athletes visible through national pride, inspirational affect, and life-lesson narratives, rather than as professional sport labor. The paper uses "bounded visibility" to describe this condition: athletes are publicly recognized, but mainly within frames that celebrate personal strength while structural conditions remain less visible. It argues that transition is also a mediatized process in which disability, ability, body, and social value are continuously negotiated.
