Physical activity is not only an individual health behavior but also a socially embedded practice shaped by historical change, life-course demands, and shifting social conditions. Using nationally representative data from the Taiwan Social Change Survey, this study examines changes in vigorous physical activity among Taiwanese adults from 2000 to 2025, based on repeated survey waves comprising more than 13,000 respondents. Physical activity was measured by weekly frequency of exercise or activities that made respondents noticeably sweat. The findings show that physical activity in Taiwan generally increased before the COVID-19 period, reflecting a broader societal shift toward health awareness and bodily engagement. However, this trend was not linear and appeared to be interrupted around 2020, suggesting that physical activity is sensitive to major social disruptions. Although women consistently reported lower physical activity than men, women showed a clearer gradual increase over time, whereas men’s trajectory was less stable. A life-course perspective further reveals that adults aged 30–39 and 40–49 reported relatively lower levels of physical activity, likely due to work responsibilities, family caregiving, and time constraints. These patterns were also gendered: men aged 30–39 showed some increase, whereas men aged 40–49 showed a weaker trajectory; among women, the 30–39 group remained consistently low, while the 40–49 group slightly declined by 2020. Overall, this study situates physical activity within Taiwan’s broader social transformation. For physical education, the findings highlight the need to move beyond school-based approaches and promote lifelong movement literacy, workplace-based support, gender-sensitive opportunities, and community programs that help adults maintain active living across changing social conditions.
