Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has long been said to provide spatially resolved chemical information of the surface of an object. Nevertheless, its conventional two-dimensional representation can hinder relating materials to volumetric space. This is especially important for sculptures, archaeological artefacts, and architectural surfaces, where volume plays a fundamental role in understanding the sample.
In this talk, we will surf into the possibilities of applying HSI in the shortwave infrared range (SWIR) to scan volumes. We will present four ongoing studies that address different steps in the path from spectral acquisition to chemically informed three-dimensional (3D) visualisation. Together, they show how acquisition geometry, image reconstruction and, of course, chemometrics can make HSI information more useful for understanding complex objects. Besides, it makes it much more fun as well.
