The chemical compositions of W- and Nb-rich members of the columbite supergroup, occurring as black prismatic crystals from Tahara, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, were re-examined. Back-scattered electron (BSE) images reveal that the crystals consist of a W-richer core and a W-poorer mantle. Combined results from electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) suggest that the empirical formulae of the average compositions of the core and mantle are (Fe2+0.582Mn0.338Sc0.055Zr0.024Sn0.008Ti0.004Nb0.230Ta0.020W0.741)Σ2.00[O3.838(OH)0.162] and (Fe2+0.392Mn0.390Sc0.028Zr0.008Sn0.005Ti0.011Nb0.740Ta0.073W0.353)Σ2.00[O3.927(OH)0.073], respectively.
