This study examines the effectiveness and limitations of private-sector participation in international development through a case study of a coffee farmer support project jointly implemented in Laos by Sakanotochu Co., Ltd. and the UN World Food Programme (WFP). Unlike conventional ODA projects focusing on production and self-reliance, private-sector engagement ensures market linkage, long-term sustainability, and co-creation with local communities. Findings show that company participation enables continued market access, practical market-based training, and a seamless transition from aid to business. However, dependency on specific actors and delayed economic returns remain challenges. The study highlights the potential of a hybrid model integrating private markets and ODA inclusiveness.
