Fri. May 30, 2025 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM JST
Fri. May 30, 2025 12:00 AM - 1:30 AM UTC
Exhibition Hall Special Setting (1) Exhibition Hall 7&8, Makuhari Messe
convener:Simon Richard Wallis(The University of Tokyo), Kristen Averyt(American Geophysical Union), Takashi Oguchi(Center for Spatial Information Science, The University of Tokyo), Yukihiro Takahashi(Department of Cosmosciences, Graduate School of Science, Hokkaido University), Chairperson:Takashi Oguchi(Center for Spatial Information Science, The University of Tokyo)

Many of the major risks facing societies are closely linked to geoscience: volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami, great storm events and land slides can all cause widespread destruction and disruption. The long term effects of climate change, and the depletion of mineral and water resources are also key challenges for global societies. Resilient societies can recover from great disasters. To become more resilient societies need to develop and strengthen their ability to absorb the direct effects, anticipate of forthcoming events and adapt to ameliorate the effects of the next. In this session we look at how geoscience can contribute to helping build more resilient societies including reaching out to other disciplines to help develop new approaches and solutions.
The session will consist of invited presentations and a panel discussion.
