[AOS26-P16]Discussion and Future collaboration for Coastal Ecosystem studies

Coastal marine ecosystems are complex open systems that interact with surrounding watersheds, the outer ocean, and the atmosphere, providing a wide range of ecosystem services to human society. At the same time, they are strongly and often negatively influenced by human activities. This session, together with a companion session dedicated to the water cycle and land–ocean interactions, aims to provide a platform for interdisciplinary discussion on frontier topics in coastal ecosystem science.
This session particularly focuses on shallow-water benthic communities from temperate to tropical regions, including coral reefs, seagrass and macroalgal beds, mangroves, intertidal flats, and salt marshes. These communities are characterized by high primary productivity, active biogeochemical cycling, and biodiversity hotspots. However, increasing human demand for coastal resources and the concentration of industrial development in coastal regions pose serious risks of rapid degradation and loss.
Comprehensive assessment and long-term monitoring of ecosystem functions, together with the development of effective conservation and restoration approaches, are urgently needed. The session will also promote future collaboration in coastal ecosystem research.
