[O05-P02]Folklore of “Split rock” in Japan related to Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)★Invited Papers

There are split rocks (large rocks split in half) in some localities in Japan. They often have folklore, e.g., a legendary person splitting them. The famous Japanese manga, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, has a scene in which a human splits a large rock. Because the scene is widely recognized in conjunction with the huge success of Demon Slayer, this study examined news articles from newspapers and other media that associate the split rocks in each locality. As a result, 10 split rocks in 16 news articles were found. These split rocks are classified into three types: named, unnamed, and artificially placed. Some cases showed new legends being reported, seemingly “overwriting” existing legends.
