The Earth’s atmospheric energy budget is closely linked to the general circulation through vertical motions in the atmosphere. Atmospheric vertical motion plays a central role not only in the global circulation but also in a wide range of atmospheric processes, including deep convective clouds that produce heavy precipitation, cloud and precipitation formation, the vertical transport of atmospheric constituents such as anthropogenic greenhouse gases, and the exchange of chemical species between the troposphere and the stratosphere. However, direct observations of atmospheric vertical motion over broad spatial domains remain challenging, and its representation in numerical models depends strongly on model resolution; thus, its nature remains poorly understood. In this talk, we approach atmospheric vertical motion from multiple perspectives, including observational studies enabled by emerging measurement technologies, satellite observations of cloud vertical motions from the EarthCARE mission, and high-resolution numerical modeling. By understanding atmospheric vertical motion, we aim to foster discussion of atmospheric circulation and the Earth’s energy budget.
