[O12-P25]Research on catalytic reactions of platinum foil

Background
Platinum foil exhibits a catalytic reaction in which spraying hydrogen onto its surface produces water explosively.Our school’s seniors researched it and discovered something that differs from the prevailing theory.However this previous study did not compare substances other than hydrogen or the shape of platinum.From those perspectives, we began this study with the aim of discovering new insights into reaction mechanisms.
Experiments and results
(1)Comparison of catalytic reactions with various chemicals.
Method
We reacted platinum foil with 0.05 mol each of methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, and diethyl ether.
Result
Reactions were observed for methanol and diethyl ether, but not for the other substances.
(2)We compared the sizes of the holes in the platinum foil.
Method
We compared whether there was a difference in the reaction between platinum foil with large holes and platinum foil with small holes.
Result
The results were the same as in Experiment (1).
(3) Effect of the amount of vaporized chemicals on the reaction.
Method
The comparison was made between normal vaporization and vaporization using 50°C water to increase the vaporization rate.
Result
Samples treated with water at 50°C showed evidence of catalytic reactions with all the chemicals.
Consideration
We compared the reactions using various chemicals, but most showed no signs of reaction. This suggests that the lack of reaction is due to the small pore size on the surface of the platinum foil.However, since no significant difference in the reaction was observed even when the size of the holes was changed, the size of the holes was not a significant factor.The reaction was observed with all chemicals only when the vaporization rate was increased.Therefore,we concluded that the substances that did not react had a low amount of vaporized material and did not provide sufficient heat to sustain the reaction.
