[O13-P05]Pine weakened issues and Geological Structure of the Islands in Matsushima Bay

(1)Backgrounds
Our Rifu town area is the core part of Matsushima, which was known as the three most scenic spots in Japan and there are more than 260 islands. Matsushima means as the pine tree islands.(Fig.1)
Among them, we have investigated the weakened pine trees on some islands and narrow cape point “Umanose” which means the horse back shape-. Recently we have seen the extinction a plenty of pine trees.
The Low level pH in the soils was led by acid rain, it may be make the pine trees susceptible to wilt.
(2)Pine tree Observation
Furthermore on these islands such as DzaiDjoh-jima island, plenty of the pine trees are dying. Pine trees die directly due to pine wilt nematodes or pinewood nematodes. We detected pine wood nematodes using Behrmann's experimental method.(Fig.2)
Particularly those located at the very top of the island, this is likely due to the direct impact of acid rain.
Which Causes the water to accumulate at the top and directly kill the pine trees.
(3) The soil pH Measurement
We also measured the soil pH at approximately 100 different locations.(Fig.3)

We considered the geological structure to understand why water tends to accumulate at the summit.
The strata are mostly horizontal. But they have been seen to be moderate sloping slightly to the north.
Even though with low soil pH, the pine trees can thrive if water can go through them. We estimated the direction of water flow beneath the islands based on the geological structure, which has the bedding planes with a mild slope
(4) Next conservation of pines
We are currently working with towns’people who have been co-operated us, the town hall, and the park office of Matsushima to consider what we can do to improve the soil.
We would like to discuss about details at the meeting.
