[U10-02] Attracting and Retaining the Next Generation of Scientists in Japan: An International Researcher’s View★Invited Papers

Based on more than 30 years of experience in Japanese academia this presentation offers an international researcher’s perspective on how Japan can better attract and retain students and early-career scientists. Drawing on firsthand experience across multiple institutions and career stages, I will discuss structural challenges facing young researchers, including financial insecurity, limited career diversity, and barriers to international mobility. I will also highlight strengths of the Japanese research system that are often underappreciated, such as long-term institutional stability and strong research communities. By comparing Japanese practices with those in other countries, this talk aims to identify practical policy directions that could support a more sustainable, inclusive, and globally connected research environment for the next generation of scientists.
