The Science Council of Japan's Committee on Earth and Planetary Sciences, in collaboration with JpGU, has developed and reported on the “Science and Dream Roadmap 2020 in Earth and Planetary Sciences.” Over six years have passed since the previous report, and Japan's Earth and Planetary Sciences and the circumstances surrounding them have changed. Consequently, work to revise this Science and Dream Roadmap is underway. Furthermore, the Science Council of Japan (SCJ) has compiled the 2023 edition of the “Future Vision for Academic Promotion,” which outlines the future vision for Japan's academic community as a whole. Here, the Science and Dream Roadmap for Earth and Planetary Sciences serves as the foundation for grouping medium- to long-term strategies within grand visions for the entire academic community in Japan. Currently, SCJ is soliciting, reviewing, and analyzing proposals for the “Mid-to-Long-Term Strategies for Academic Research” as part of minor revisions to the 2026 edition of the “Future Vision for Academic Development.” However, a call for proposals for a major revision of the “Future Vision for Academic Development” is also expected to begin in the not-too-distant future. Therefore, revising the Science and Dream Roadmap will also involve re-evaluating the position of Earth and planetary sciences within the broader academic landscape. In this presentation, we will discuss the overall direction for the revision based on the results of the roadmap deliberations within each science section at JpGU, aiming to refine the roadmap to better advance Earth and planetary sciences.
