A theory is proposed for allowing for optimization of observation systems, owing to data assimilation by Kalman filters. In particular cases of locating many sensors, the observability Gramian matrices are calculated from distributed Kalman filters for data fusion, and thereby sensor locations are optimized. Examples for optimization of sensor locations are illustrated for simple models such as the Lorenz model.
