Standing striations observed in the positive column region of DC glow discharge have been known for a long time, and detailed studies have been conducted on the mechanism of moving striations. We have developed a device that levitates micron-sized particles in the outer discharge region (the area extending downward beyond the cathode and anode positioned vertically) and discovered that the levitated particle cluster forms fine stationary layers. To elucidate the formation mechanism of these fine stationary layers, we measured the current-voltage characteristics in the outer discharge region.
