Ionic crystals, which include many semiconductor materials used in solar cells and quantum dots, have seen significant development in nanoparticle synthesis methods. Nanoparticles exhibit extremely large specific surface areas and short ion diffusion distances, enabling ion exchange reactions—where cations or anions are replaced with other ions—to occur much faster than in bulk materials. In this presentation, I will discuss the effects of ion exchange reactions on the morphology and crystal structure of metal chalcogenide nanoparticles and introduce the resulting nanostructures.
