Under the SIP, JAMSTEC has developed a number of instruments for geophysical exploration and conducted various survey on many hydrothermal active areas. We have verified the technique of self-potential survey as a survey method to identify candidate areas of submarine hydrothermal deposits. We have also proposed a self-potential survey using an AUV as a high-efficient exploration method. In order to obtain detailed sub-seafloor structure, we have developed a deep-tow system for controlled current transmission, and have conducted various verification surveys.
