Polyimide alignment films are widely used for the liquid crystal displays. Compared to the conventional rubbing method, photo alignment method attracted much attention because it can prevent from the contaminants. To understand the orientation mechanism of the polyimides by the photo irradiation, it is important to investigate the changes in the molecular states at the polyimide surfaces. In this presentation, surface anisotropy and the molecular orientation at the polyimide surfaces are investigated by the vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy. We will also discuss the different behavior between the rubbing and the photo alignment methods quantitatively.
