Semi-transparent organic photovoltaic cells (STOPV) are expected to become widely used in a variety of applications, including building windows, agriculture and energy conservation. The main feature of STOPV is that, by making use of the wavelength selectivity of organic materials in absorbing light, it is possible to create novel solar cells that are transparent to the human eye have excellent ‘visibility’, or are transparent to only the wavelengths necessary for the growth of plants for agriculture. In this presentation, we will discuss the importance of average visible transmittance as a performance indicator for STOPV, and consider its application to the design guidelines for high-performance STOPV.
