Tetrabenzoporphyrins (TBPs) are promising organic semiconductors due to the rigid structure and two-dimensionally extended pi-conjugation. However, the tendency of 5,15-substituted TBPs to form one-dimensional crossed pi-stacking structure is disadvantageous for organic field-effect transistor (OFET) applications compared to 2-D packing strucure. We have found that two molecules of an unsymmetric TBP derivative with different substituents at positions 5 and 15 preferentially form a herringbone structure, a useful 2-D packing for organic semiconductor materials, by offsetting dipole moments when facing each other. Their synthesis, crystal structures, and single-crystal OFET characteristics will be presented.
