[15p-K201-5]Structural order of glass and its related physical properties

glass,structure ordering,optical properties

Silica glass contains numbers of empty spaces called voids that significantly affect Rayleigh scattering losses. When the glass is frozen under high pressure, these voids shrink, leading to a substantial reduction in scattering losses. The voids are observed as an approximately 8 A structural order peak in X-ray scattering, which disappears under high pressure. This structural order is strongly related not only to optical properties but also to thermal conductivity. It has also been found that this order can be controlled using chemical pressure of crystalline substrate surfaces.
