This paper reports Surface Plasmon (SP) resonance behavior of Ag film coated with SnO2 layer and its protection against surface modification by sulfur and hydrocarbon components in the air atmosphere. The SnO2 layer was grown in Na2SO3 solution by wet method. The reflection spectroscopy showed that the SP resonance behavior of the SnO2-coated Ag film was essentially the same as that of the bare Ag film. This means that the Ag surface was protected as expected by the introduction of the SnO2 layer. The protection provided by the SnO2 layer against the surface modification persisted for several days after sample preparation. The chemical state studied by XPS method and the surface morphology observed by AFM method are also reported.
