The atomic switch (product name: NanoBridgeTM) is a device that utilizes the phenomenon in which copper ions form and dissolve a bridge within a solid electrolyte between electrodes under an applied voltage. It features a large OFF/ON resistance ratio, making it a highly effective resistive switching element. The FPGA equipped with atomic switches (NanoBridge FPGA: NBFPGA) replaces the semiconductor switches and memory typically used in FPGAs with the compact atomic switches, thereby improving power efficiency. Additionally, due to its excellent resistance to radiation and high temperatures, it is expected to serve as a technology that achieves both low power consumption and high performance in space-grade FPGAs. This paper discusses the operating principle of the atomic switch, the internal structure of the NBFPGA, and its high-temperature operating characteristics.
