Propagation of sound is accompanied by the temporal and spatial modulation in the density of media, which causes the modulation of refractive index, and then provides deflection, diffraction, and modulation of optical path length. This is utilized for measurement and visualization of ultrasound. On the other hand, pulsed light generates ultrasound since the illumination of light induces thermal expansion. This phenomenon is applied for non-destructive evaluation and medical imaging. Interaction between light and sound is more obvious in an optical fiber, and utilized as distributed sensors.
