We are researching and developing a compact breathalyzer sensing system based on cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) utilizing an optical waveguide. To enhance the sensitivity of the system, we investigated the application of a logarithmic amplifier. Our results indicate a significant reduction in the lower detection limit and an approximately 20 times improvement in ring-down time. This enhancement effectively corresponds to a substantial increase in the effective cavity length within the CRDS, leading to an overall sensitivity improvement by a factor of approximately 20.
