In this study, we designed and developed a plasmonic modulator with a high extinction ratio at the optical communication wavelength of 1.55 μm by incorporating the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) into a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure. FDTD simulations showed that elongating and thinning the GST improved the extinction ratio to 13.9 dB. In the experiment, Si waveguides were fabricated on an SOI substrate, and by focusing laser light onto the sample surface, the light input and output via the coupler were demonstrated.
