In this study, we have developed sub-nanoscale isotope detection using EELS for vibrational spectroscopy, which has been difficult to achieve with existing techniques. By selectively detecting high-angle scattered electrons, we were able to track the self-diffusion of carbon isotopes in graphene at the atomic level. We were also able to visualize deuterium-labeled organic molecules at the nanoscale, even in polymer samples with no crystalline structure.
