If it is possible to synthesize C3 or higher compounds from CO2 in electrochemical CO2 reduction, CO2 can be substituted for the synthesis of C3 or higher compounds even when resources are depleted, thereby realizing a society that does not need petroleum. Therefore, we investigated the formation of C3 compounds at conductive a-C electrodes with nitrogen-containing and oxygen-containing functional groups as adsorption sites and the CO2 reduction mechanism by the role of the functional groups. The results showed that lactic acid was obtained as the main product, and the oxygen-containing and nitrogen-containing functional groups were considered to be involved.
