The SPS method is a technology that is widely used in fields such as powder metallurgy, and it has the characteristic of being able to obtain a dense sintered body in a short time at a lower temperature than normal methods. Apart from using a pulsed current as the heat source, it is similar to the piston-cylinder type high-pressure synthesis method. For this reason, we are developing an ultra-high-pressure SPS device in order to pursue the further possibilities of SPS devices. So far, we have developed a piston-cylinder type and a Drickamer-anvil type, and when we conducted synthesis experiments using these, we found that we could synthesize under even better conditions than with a normal SPS device. Here, we will report on the results of those experiments, focusing on the synthesis of glass from SiO2 powder.
