We fabricated a CMOS-based multimodal image sensor that enables simultaneous measurement of three-dimensional force and pH toward applications in mechanobiology, and verified the sensor function for force and pH response.
After placing a pH7 solution on the sensor, a shear force was applied to the microstructure using a nylon fiber-based needle and an alkaline solution(pH8) was dropped onto the sensor for simultaneous force and pH measurement. As a result, output image for force and pH change were significantly observed at the pixels directly under the structure- and pH-sensitive pixel, successfully achieved the multimodal sensing of force and pH in a solution.
