The balance between sink and source tissues is critical for plant growth and productivity. This study investigated the timing and mechanisms of the sink-to-source transition in soybean leaves. Using 14C-labeled carbon dioxide, we pinpointed the timing of the switch in photosynthate allocation during leaf development. RNA-seq analysis revealed significant changes in gene expression, including increased expression of genes involved in sucrose metabolism and transport, while sink-specific genes showed decreased expression. By integrating plant radioisotope imaging techniques with gene expression profiles, we explore the potential applications of these findings to enhance plant productivity.
