In this study, we investigated the direct growth of diamond on insulating MgO substrates without any surface pretreatment using microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD). Although MgO is an electrical insulator, its surface properties strongly depend on the crystallographic orientation: the presence or absence of surface polarity differs among orientations, and the surface electronic states are known to exhibit metallic-like behavior in certain cases. Such orientation-dependent surface states may play an important role in determining the initial nucleation behavior of diamond.
