In this talk, we present a new type of photocathode based on metallic metamaterials. When a pulsed laser with an electric-field periodicity resonant with the structural periodicity of the metallic metamaterial is irradiated onto the target, surface plasmons, which are collective density oscillations of free electrons, are excited. These surface plasmons generate locally enhanced electric fields that induce the photoelectric effect. As a result, an electron beam with a very narrow energy spread of approximately 20 meV is obtained, making it a suitable electron source for beam focusing.
