[12人-口-04]From Place to MenhuChanges in Spatial Order in Martial Arts Training Grounds
*Enxi Li1 (1. Nippon Sport Science University)
Identity is very important to those who practice martial arts.Even people practicing martial arts in the park are asked by others, "What style is practiced, who is the master, and which gateway do they belong to"Menhu""."Menhu" is a basic concept in martial arts, where practitioners belong to in order to construct their own identity.According to Chen, "Menhu" is a special collective organization constructed by considering the teacher-student system as a relational center, which needs to satisfy two basic conditions of shared culture and common interest requirements.According to these scholars, the "Menhu" exists as a space of "transmission".However, the essential question of how portals are formed has not been explained. It is necessary to go back to the original "land" where "Menhu" were created, that is, the training ground, to explore the development process of portals.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship between the internal space of the martial arts training ground and the space of the "Menhu".In terms of research methodology, participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and case study fieldwork were used.
1) Physical and social space of the training ground
The ruler (sifu) treats martial arts skills as "knowledge" and transforms power and knowledge into actual power through space. Therefore, power in the training ground uses space as a tool to discipline practitioners.
2) From physical space to social space to "Menhu" space
In the "Menhu" space, the hierarchy and boundaries of the above power will be "made transparent".Practitioners can become new Sifu and create new "Menhu".In addition, there is no distinction between inside and outside the "Menhu" space, and everyone will become a member of the "Menhu".Further, when the practitioner becomes the master, the new physical-social space begins to transform into the "Menhu" space, and this new master becomes the ruler of power in the new physical-social space.
