体育・スポーツ社会学を専攻。九州大学、奈良女子大学、筑波大学を経て、現在国士舘大学大学院特任教授。教育学博士（筑波大学）。日本スポーツ体育健康科学学術連合代表、前日本体育・スポーツ・健康学会会長、前日本スポーツ社会学会会長（現在顧問）、前文部科学省学習指導要領作成協力者（高校保健体育、座長）など。
