[2A01【招待講演】]Surface Science in Tribology: Addressing Friction-Related Problems

Tribology is an interdisciplinary field that integrates mechanical engineering, materials science, chemistry, and nanotechnology. Since friction, wear, and lubrication originate at contacting interfaces, surface science provides the fundamental basis for understanding and controlling these phenomena. By elucidating interfacial processes such as true contact area, tribochemical reactions, and tribofilm formation, surface science plays a vital role in reducing friction, minimizing wear, and improving lubrication.Its importance will continue to increase as emerging technologies, including electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered systems, and aerospace machinery, operate under increasingly demanding conditions. Moreover, artificial intelligence and digital twin technologies rely on high-quality surface characterization data for accurate prediction and optimization. Therefore, future advances in tribology will depend on the ability to observe, understand, and engineer surfaces, making surface science one of the key scientific foundations of modern tribology.
