[2A04【依頼講演】]Measurement of Adsorption/Friction Properties of nm-thick Additive Adsorption Films by Vertical-objective-type Ellipsometric Microscopy (VEM)

In industries such as automotive engineering, ultra-low-viscosity lubricants are increasingly required to reduce frictional losses and improve energy efficiency. However, the effectiveness of fluid lubrication decreases with decreasing lubricant viscosity, making boundary lubrication provided by lubricant additives increasingly important. Nevertheless, reliable techniques for simultaneously characterizing these properties remain limited. We have developed a vertical-objective-type ellipsometric microscope (VEM) that achieves a gap resolution of approximately 0.1 nm and a lateral resolution of approximately 0.1 μm by focusing the illumination beam off-axis at the back focal plane of the objective lens [1]. Based on this system, we further established a method for evaluating additive adsorption films in base oils [2]. This approach therefore enables simultaneous and quantitative characterization of both the adsorption behavior and frictional performance of nanometer-thick additive films.
