[2B03]125 Years of pressure and vacuum research and standards at NIST: From high-altitude chambers to quantum metrology

Since its founding in 1901, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)—originally the National Bureau of Standards (NBS)—has been at the forefront of vacuum research and pressure metrology. This history spans from early milestones, such as the development of high-altitude chambers to simulate flight environments at altitudes of 10 km, to the establishment of a dedicated pressure and vacuum research group in the 1960s. Today, NIST supports pressure metrology across 15 decades of pressure using classical primary standards. Recently, the institution has pivoted toward the next generation of measurement science by integrating cutting-edge, quantum-based methods. This presentation traces the historical evolution of pressure and vacuum standards at NIST, examines the role of classical primary standards, and introduces the quantum-based advancements that will define the future of calibration.
