[2C08]Polarizability measurement for a giant polyoxometalate molecule by Fowler-Nordheim tunneling spectroscopy

Electrostatic force microscopy (EFM), based on atomic force microscopy techniques, is a powerful method for visualizing nanoscale distributions of electrostatic forces. We developed Fowler-Nordheim (FN) tunneling spectroscopy based on the EFM technique, which provides localized information on molecular multilayer energy-level alignment and the polarizability of a single molecule through a combination of capacitance measurements based on EFM under low electrostatic fields and tunneling-current measurements under high electric fields. In this study, we demonstrate that FN tunneling spectroscopy allows us to evaluate the polarizability of a giant polyoxometalate (POM) molecule - too large for conventional theoretical calculations - by analyzing its tunneling characteristics. The polarizability of the POM was evaluated to be approximately 9.3 × 10-38 C2 m2 J-1.
