[2C15]Step-site-promoted methanol decomposition on Cu(977) under near-ambient-pressure conditions

Methanol decomposition on well-defined Cu(977) was investigated by synchrotron radiation NAP-XPS at NanoTerasu BL-08U combined with QMS and also studied by NAP-IRAS in the laboratory. NAP-XPS revealed a dominant C 1s component at 284.7 eV assigned to CHx and/or C species, a component around 287.5 eV suggesting formate species, and weak 288–293 eV features tentatively assigned to satellite structures of adsorbed CO. O 1s spectra indicated formate, OH-, and H2O-related species. QMS simultaneously detected formaldehyde, CO, and H2O as desorption produced from the surface. In addition, NAP-IRAS showed methoxy bands at 2815, 2892, 2919, and 1022 cm-1 and a CO band even at 2 × 10-6 Torr. These results show that Cu step sites strongly promote methoxy formation and its multiple pathways including decomposition and desorption.
