[2P08]Simultaneous soft X-ray absorption measurements of solid–liquid interfaces and bulk liquids using electron-yield and transmission modes

A liquid cell that enables simultaneous measurements of bulk liquids in transmission mode and solid-liquid interfaces in electron-yield mode in soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was developed and demonstrated at KEK-PF. The liquid cell consists of a 100-nm-thick Si3N4 membrane and a gold-deposited Si3N4 membrane sandwiching a liquid layer. We measured O K-edge XAS spectra of the H2O/Au interface in electron-yield mode by detecting the drain current from the Au surface induced by soft X-ray irradiation, while O K-edge XAS spectra of bulk H2O were simultaneously obtained in transmission mode by precisely controlling the thickness of the liquid layer. The XAS spectrum of the H2O/Au interface showed a clear difference in the pre-edge region compared with the bulk H2O spectrum. Future applications of this liquid cell to catalytic reactions at solid-liquid interfaces will also be discussed.
