[2P23]Formation behavior of carbon nanotube filaments induced by gas discharge breakdown under helium atmosphere

We have examined formation process of carbon nanotube (CNT) filaments by gas discharge using multielectrode structure. This method is expected to be a CNT spinning method that can be applied to various types of CNTs that are difficult to spin by conventional methods. However, CNT yarns formed by this method still have low density and nonuniform shapes, which makes it difficult to obtain CNT yarn with sufficient mechanical strength. To solve these problems, we adopted He gas as a discharge gas instead of conventional Ar gas. Our results showed that He discharge provided more stable and uniform discharge mode than Ar, improving the CNT filament formation efficiency. Further, He discharge exhibited high CNT filament formation efficiency for shorter CNTs than the conventional ones. These results show that the He discharge is promising for CNT yarn formation using gas discharge.
